VASSILIS VETSOS

 

 

Born in Mitilini and at the age of thirteen, he started studying music by receiving guitar lessons from Andreas Avagianos, then ninety two years old, a notable  trumpet player at Athenian light operas. At 1977, whilst a student at the Science and Mathematics Faculty of the University of Thessaloniki, he continued his music studies at conservatories having as teachers the following guitar players: Mironas Kenigalakis, Babis Kourkoudialos, Dimitris Ioannou and Kostas Kotsiolis. He attended national seminars in Cuba, Hungary and Greece by L. Brower and H. Kappel. At 1987 he received his guitar diploma with a unanimous «Excellent» grade.

He followed lessons of advanced theory by the composer Christos Samaras, whose piece «Monologos» (monologue) he performed for the first time. He attended a full course of «Music and Education» studies at the Music College of Thessaloniki. In 1992 he created a seminar of «Musical and Educational approach to the guitar» at the Modern Conservatory of Thessaloniki of which he was a co founder.

He performed in theatrical plays of the «Experimental Scene» of Northern Greece’s National Theatre and has also given individual recitals in Northern Greek towns,  performing programs of chamber music with the guitarist Stergios Zigouras, the violinist Stergios Gargalas and the singer Georgia Silaiou. He composed music for the plays «Poison of Theatre» and «Faidra» for the theatrical scene «Leki Vethou».

He studied Byzantine Music with Eleftherios Georgiadis (1998 Diploma) and was involved  with traditional music by playing oud and dulcimer. Helped by his studies of Mathematics, he attempted to give another interpretative explanatory of the theoretical system of Greek music, using the monochord canon as teaching tool. He was a founding member of the Traditional Music School «EN  CHORDAIS». At the same time, he played violoncello in the learned oriental music ensemble «EN

HORDAIS», participating in concerts and recordings. He taught general music at several conservatories in N. Greece and at the level of Secondary Music Education. He researches, performs and keeps archives of the music of Lesbos. Indeed at the same time he was a founder member of the band «ARNAMOUS» which was active in Thessaloniki, studying and recreating the tradition of music from Lesbos.
