He was born in Tripoli, Arkadia in 1964.
He studied Byzantine music at the Simon Carras School (1985-1988). In 1985
he has started playing the oud, the Greek lute and the saz, basically as a
self taught performer, taking private lessons with some of the virtuosos of
the instruments. He was co-founder of the first Greek “alternative” musical
scene “Ravanastron”, organizing concerts of famous groups and individual
performers from all over the world. Also, Vassilis Tzortzinis was one of the
pioneer teachers of traditional music and instruments at the first Greek
Musical High School (Pallini-Athens, 1989-1991).
He was a member of the group “Sehnaz”, performing the traditional art music
of Constantinople with the oud. He has participated in many concerts in
Greece and other countries, collaborating with famous Greek as well as other
origin performers and soloists. He has a continuous cooperation with EN
CHORDAIS organization and the homonymous musical ensemble, participating in
concerts as well as in musical accompaniment of literature readings:
Byzantine Festival in London, “Crossroads” at Athens Concert Hall,
“Byzantine Memories” in Venice.
Moreover, Vassilis Tzortzinis has translated in the Greek language the book
“The Music of the Arabs”, edited by the famous Arab musicologist Habib
Hassan Touma (EN CHORDAIS, under publication). He cooperates with the
“Centre for Aegean Folklore and Musicological Studies” (KALME) at the
sections of concerts and musical publication. He is co-founder of the
“Orient
Χpress”
group, playing music from Greece, Balkans and Arabic countries from the
Middle East to Maghreb.
Finally, he is also a Mechanical Engineer, working in engineering and
management of industrial projects in Greece and abroad.
