Yiorgis Xilouris
comes from Anogia, Crete and belongs to a large family of musicians which
has contributed a lot to the Cretan music tradition. He grew up listening to
his father playing who he still accompanies with his lute as he did in his
childhood, as well as his uncles, Yiannis Xilouris (lute) and, of course,
the one and only Nikos Xilouris.
Because of his unique way of playing, he is today considered to be one of
the most significant players of theCretan lute of his generation.
He lived in Australia for eight years, where he created the «Xilouris
Ensemble» with which he made many appearances and recordings.
His ability to coexist with musicians from various traditions, without
betraying his Cretan roots, is an important element of his identity.
Nowadays he plays, teaches, and records in Crete, where he lives with his
family.
