STEPHEN GOTTLIEB

 

 

 

 

Stephen Gottlieb studied Architecture at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London. Before his graduation in 1971 he started making instruments. In 1974 he had a four month trip with British Arts Council studying around the principal musical instrument collections of Western Europe, examining measures and photographing instruments of the lute family of all periods. In 1975 he established his first workshop in central London.

A year later he has his second study trip to Paris Concervatory and to London collections.

In early ‘80s he has exhibited in the Craftsman's Art, in Victoria and Albert Museum in London.  Also he has demonstrated lutemaking at the V & A exhibition' Manmade'.

From 1985 to 1988 he taught Lutemaking at the London College of Furniture

Stephen Gottlieb makes all types of instruments of the Lute family, and also restores historical instruments of the 16th and 17th centuries.

 He is currently Master-elect of The Art Workers Guild, London.
